Scylla is the first of our 3 ‘Sea Dragons’ to be built on the clifftop with stunning views out to sea and panoramic view of Southwold.

The Sea Dragons were designed by the same architect who created the Listening Station and the Watch Room and are inspired by Suffolk legends.

Most famous of these is the sea monster landed by fishermen in 1749 who discovered the beast in their nets as they trawled the coastline – the creature was a terrifying marine monster that looked like a winged crocodile and which promptly attacked one man and disabled another before it was despatched to its own death. The sea dragon, as it was called, measured just over a metre in length – longer when it was alive and in the sea – and had two legs with cloven feet.

It quickly became well-known on the Suffolk celebrity circuit as one of the surviving fishermen travelled up and down the county displaying the hideous beast and telling the story of how it was found – where the beast ended up is not known, but its legend lives on.

In Webster’s 1828 dictionary it was described thus: “A marine monster caught in England in 1749, resembling in some degree an alligator, but having two large fins which served for swimming or flying, It had two legs terminating in hoofs, like those of an ass. Its body was covered with impenetrable scales, and it had five rows of teeth.”

Inspired by this legend, the ‘Sea Dragons’ take their plan form as a series of dragon tails snaking into the landscape and the winged form of each roof and splayed structure is inspired by the drawings of the legend representing the dragons winged form and perched form upon the landscape with sloping back.

The coastal location overlooking the vastness of the North Sea takes inspiration and reflects upon this Suffolk legend.

Scylla is a clad in stunning cedar shingles which represent the scales of the Sea Dragon. Inside the ‘ribs’ of the dragon are represented by the complex beamed roof structure.

The high valued ceiling gives a great feeling of space and the views through the double glazed gable end of the building offer a mesmerising 180 degree outlook to sea which is stunning in all weathers.

There is a comfortable superking bed with luxurious Egyptian Cotton bed linen where you can lie and watch the sea and sky and the stunning sun rises.

The living space also has a very comfortable 3 seater sofa to relax at the end of a busy day Scylla has a heating/air conditioning system which you can set to your preferred temperature and will keep you comfortable in all weathers.

There is a luxurious shower room with digital shower and a fully equipped kitchen area with dining table and chairs.

At the front of Scylla, there is a deck area to relax and enjoy a sundowner or a lazy breakfast and listen to the sound of the waves on the beach below.

Our beautiful, secluded beach at Easton Bavents is a c 15 minute walk down our private track. Southwold is a 10 minute walk or 3 minute cycle ride.
